Born in Chernivtsi in German speaking Jewish family, Rose Ausländer was later applying to the poetic images of her small motherland in Bukovina. Almost 20 years older than Paul Celan, she was living and working in emigration in New York, USA (in 1921-1927 and 1944-1966). However, the fate let them both experience the same tragedy in the getto of Chernivtsi where two poets met in spring 1943. In 1931-1945 Rose Ausländer was back to Czernivtsi, looking after her sick mother. After the WWII, Rose Ausländer emigrated to the USA again and lived there about 20 years until she came back to Europe and lived the last decade of her life in Düsseldorf.
